Pat McCarthy

Head Coach

Pat McCarthy comes to the King High Head Football job with some 35 years of coaching experience behind him and a long resume of success. Long considered one of the best football minds in the Inland Empire, McCarthy brings a “do things right” attitude to the Wolves and a reputation for bringing out the very best in each of his players.

For 16 years, McCarthy lead the Arlington Lions to great heights winning 92 games and making the CIF playoffs  11 times-including 8 years in a  row at one point.  That playoff run included one Ivy League Championship. Prior to Arlington, McCarthy was the first Head Coach at A. B. Miller High in Fontana A big believer in and built that program into a perennial contender until his departure in 1996.  In 1993, the Rebels won the San Andreas League Championship and got to the CIF Semi-finals. Prior to his head coaching stints, he was an assistant coach at his alma mater, Fontana High,  where he worked with the man he had played for, coaching legend Dick Bruich.  While at Fontana. McCarthy was part of a staff that, over his 8 years there,  won a CIF Big 5 Championship, won the State Championship and was ranked #2 in the nation by ESPN. His most recent assistants’ job was with the 2016 Notre Vista  serving as Defensive Coordinator .  The Braves were a Division 7 Finalist and McCarthy’s defense was ranked number one in the division.

A big believer in off season strength and conditioning as well as skill development, Coach McCarthy as guided over 40 athletes to Division 1 and Division 2 college football scholarships. Four of his athletes have played in the NFL. He has also served as a head softball and track coach along the way.

McCarthy was an All-CIF linebacker at Fontana High where the Steelers won two Citrus Belt league championships and were a CIF Finalist. Upon graduation, he moved to College of the Desert, where he was an junior college All-State safety. He earned a scholarship to Cal-Poly Pomona and played under former Los Angeles Ram quarterback Roman Gabriel.

He has been named League Coach of the Year several times; Los Angeles Times Coach of the Year 1993 and was the Riverside County All Star Coach in 2004. He has twice been a Teacher of the Year-once at Miller and again at Arlington.  Pat has his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and a  teaches PE and  Pathways at King.
